Schools 'must train teachers' to tackle homophobia

Schools must create a "culture" in which homophobia is shown to be unacceptable, Hackney New School deputy head teacher Anna Williams has said.

A YouGov poll, commissioned by gay rights group Stonewall, has shown that only 8% of primary school teachers and 17% of secondary school teachers have received training on tackling homophobic bullying.

Ms Williams told the Today programme that "every instance" of homophobic abuse must be challenged by staff.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Friday 4 July.
