Mr Punch to celebrate 350 years of puppet anarchy

They might sound like strange guests at a birthday party but a violent man with a stick and a crocodile with a string of sausages are going to be cropping up at celebrations all over the UK.

Mr Punch, the squawking red-nosed prince of slapstick, has reached his 350th anniversary.

The Heritage Lottery Fund is spending £240,000 on the occasion, and a big party will take place in London's Covent Garden piazza to commemorate his first appearance.

Arts Correspondent, David Sillito reports.
