Coward, Chancellor & Stephens

The roles of Elyot and Amanda in Noel Coward's comedy Private Lives have attracted some of the biggest names and talent the acting world has to offer - from Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor to Robert Stephens and Maggie Smith. Now actors Anna Chancellor and Toby Stephens - son of Sir Robert and Dame Maggie - are playing the confused lovers in a new West-End production, in the very place - the Gielgud Theatre - where Toby's parents appeared over forty years ago.

Here, Chancellor and Stephens talk about how the the complexities of their characters and how the humorous nature of the script belies a poignant subtext at the heart of the play.
