How acceptable are gay TV characters worldwide?

Gay characters are common on modern-day TV programmes in the US, but many of those shows are exported all over the world.

They are often shown in countries where attitudes towards gay people are far from friendly.

So are these characters enlightening international audiences or are they producing a backlash?
