Cancer diagnosis 'made me make lifestyle changes'

A new study by Cancer Research UK says almost half of cancer cases could be prevented by making simple lifestyle choices.

Jackie Gledhill, who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer 10 years ago, told BBC Breakfast that the illness made her realise she needed to take action.

"I'd had no control over it. When I had my treatment over with, I decided to make lots of lifestyle changes. My lifestyle had really gone downhill."

Dr Harpal Kumar, chief executive of Cancer Research UK, said that the findings are not "absolutely not about blame".

He said: "It's about making people aware of what is the truth - which is that around 43% of cancer cases are caused by things that largely we have the power to control."
