Hospitals 'on brink of collapse', physicians warn

Doctors are warning that hospitals in England could be on the brink of collapse because of growing demand and the complexity of cases.

A report says the number of available beds has fallen by a third over the past 25 years and warns that elderly people are particularly vulnerable.

Doctor Andrew Goddard from the Royal College of Physicians said there was no longer a respite for hospitals in the summer and that ''the winter pressure is an all-year pressure''.
