NHS England to announce plans to improve patient care

NHS England is to announce plans to improve care for hospital patients at weekends, with more senior staff on duty.

It follows concerns that patients treated on Saturdays and Sundays suffer worse medical outcomes, and higher death rates, than those admitted during the week.

BBC political correspondent Iain Watson explained what NHS England medical director Prof Sir Bruce Keogh is expected to announce.
