Silver Line helpline 'flooded with calls' on loneliness

The confidential telephone helpline set up last November to support older people says it has been inundated with calls in its first year.

The Silver Line Helpline has received more than 275,000 calls - with loneliness the biggest problem.

Organisers say some people are also using it to report abuse or neglect in their care homes.

The helpline is now starting a new partnership with the Care Quality Commission, which oversees standards in homes.

Andrea Sutcliffe of the Care Quality Commission said Silver Line was an important source of information on elderly care.
