Duke Ellington tells Michael Parkinson about his Kabul concert

Fifty years ago this week, legendary composer and pianist Duke Ellington played in an extraordinary concert - in Kabul, in Afghanistan.

Five thousand people gathered to hear what to them was the new and strange sound of jazz.

A decade later he told the BBC's Michael Parkinson that it was one of the most memorable performances of his long career. He also played Satin Doll with the Harry Stoneham Five.

First broadcast 24 February 1973.
