How to rid the oceans of plastic

Boyan Slat is a 20-year-old on a mission to rid the world's oceans of plastic.

He has dedicated his teenage years to finding a way of collecting plastic debris carried on the currents.

His concept is a single collection platform, surrounded by floating barriers - each arm stretching about 50km (30 miles).

Plastic is caught by the barriers, while the ocean current passes underneath, taking all marine life with it.

The floating debris is concentrated and moves towards the centre, where it can be efficiently extracted.
