Milking 5,000 cows three times a day

Plans are being considered for the UK's first US-style "mega-farm" to milk dairy herds on an industrial scale.

The 22-acre dairy facility at Nocton, near Lincoln, would be home to 8,000 cows and produce 387,000 pints of milk a day.

Critics say the sheer size of the operation, based on similar dairies in the US will change the face of dairy farming in the UK and pose a real risk to the welfare of the animals.

Norm Dinis keeps 5,000 cows at his Empire Dairy in Wiggins, Colorado. He explains why he has to run his milking operation 24 hours a day.
