Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall: "The public won't stand for waste"

Television chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has welcomed a move by the European Commission to set out its ideas for ending the practice of discarding fish.

Currently, EU boats in the North Sea have to throw away up to half of what they catch to stay within their quotas.

EU Fisheries Commissioner Maria Damanaki has proposed to regulate fleets through limits on fishing time and greater use of measures such as CCTV.

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, who led a television and internet campaign calling on EU leaders to put an end to the practice said he was pleased the issue had been "put on the agenda".
