Sunspots' twist resulted in flare

A quintet of sunspots is pictured by Nasa's Solar Dynamics Observatory as it launches the largest solar flare seen since 2006.

The SDO satellite recorded the Sun's activity over a five-day period around the time of the so-called X-flare, the strongest type, that occurred at 0156 GMT on 15 February.
