Discovery, the workhorse of the shuttle fleet, retired after 27 years, 39 flights and more than a year in space, in early 2011.

During her career, she relaunched the shuttle programme after the Challenger and Columbia disasters, took a 77-year-old John Glenn into space and deployed the Hubble Space Telescope.
