KMOS instrument seeks 'first starlight'

European scientists and engineers have finished the KMOS instrument, an 8.5-tonne machine to inspect the light coming from the most distant galaxies in the Universe.

It will be fitted to the Very Large Telescope at the Paranal Observatory in Chile.

Instrument engineer Phil Rees from UKATC talks to our correspondent Jonathan Amos about the development of KMOS.
