KMOS instrument will seek 'first light'

European scientists and engineers have finished the KMOS instrument, an 8.5-tonne machine to inspect the light coming from the most distant galaxies in the Universe.

It will be fitted to the Very Large Telescope at the Paranal Observatory in Chile.

Instrument scientist Dr Michele Cirasuolo from UKATC talks to our correspondent Jonathan Amos about the role of KMOS.
