The infamous Piltdown 'cricket bat'

Exactly 100 years to the week that the fake Piltdown Man "fossils" were presented to the world, the specimens are back in the lab and the subject of serious study.

An elephant bone shaped to look like a hand tool was perhaps the most outrageous deception in the whole scandal.

Prof Adrian Lister of the UK's Natural History Museum described the object to BBC correspondent Jonathan Amos.
