Proboscis monkey on ugly animal list

The public has voted for the long-nosed proboscis monkey as one of the top five ugliest animals in the world, in a campaign designed to highlight the conservation plight of less "classically charismatic" creatures.

The public vote, organised by the Ugly Animal Preservation Society, was won by the deep-sea-dwelling blobfish.

In this 1988 clip from the BBC One programme Odd Noses of Borneo, Sir David Attenborough addresses the question of exactly why the endangered proboscis monkey has such an oversized nose.
