Meteorite that hit Nicaragua 'dropped off' larger asteroid

A meteorite that landed near the Nicaraguan capital Managua on Sunday could have come from the 2014 RC asteroid which was passing the earth at the time, experts have said.

Speaking on Today, astronomer Dr Heather Couper explained that although more investigation is needed it does appear the meteorite came from the larger 2014 RC asteroid: "A bit must have dropped off."

"These impacts happen about once a year, so we do have to be on our toes," she added.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Monday 8 September.
