Joy of text: SMS messaging is 20 years old

Twenty years ago today, the first ever text message was sent.

It simply read "Merry Christmas" and was sent by a young telephone engineer.

Now it is thought eight trillion texts are sent a year, as Rory Cellan Jones reports.
