Heat map shows festival moshpit

Heat maps using real-time data on crowd numbers and behaviour are helping to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities at large scale events.

Crowd scientist Anders Johansson analysed CCTV images of pilgrims at the 2006 Hajj, in which at least 346 people were killed, assessing patterns of behaviour before and during the crush.

His company, CrowdVision, then developed live crowd analytic software which has been used to pinpoint problems in a range of places, from airports to the London 2012 Olympics.

This clip shows a heat map of a recent UK music festival.
