Radical police shake-up outlined

Plans for a massive shake-up in policing in England and Wales have been outlined by the home secretary, Theresa May.

The plans include directly-elected police commissioners as well as an American-style National Crime Agency to tackle organised crime.

One of the central themes is giving power to the people and getting the public involved in policing with community crime fighters and neighbourhood watch groups.

May has said she wants to 'unleash the power of community pride'. But Labour says the plans are 'simply madness'.

Andy Tighe reports.
