WWII veteran takes comfort from VJ Day service

A veteran who fought in the Far East during World War II has relived his memories in an interview with the BBC, after a memorial service at the Cenotaph to mark the 65th anniversary of VJ Day.

Peter Heppell said he felt that marking the event "helps in a way", as it gave him an opportunity to remember those he knew who were lost in the conflict.

Almost 30,000 British service personnel died while serving in the Far East. Of the hundreds of thousands who fought, 12,500 died in Japanese prison camps.
