We must hold nerve, insists Clegg at LibDem conference

Nick Clegg has urged the party not to lose its nerve as the government prepares to announce drastic reductions in public spending.

This is the first time the party has come together since forming a coalition with the Conservatives after the election.

Mr Clegg insisted that tough action was justified to tackle the deficit.

He spoke just a few hours after the conference had voted against government plans to create so-called 'free schools' out of local authority control.

Nick Robinson reports.
