Travellers turned away from heavily congested Heathrow

Travellers are being turned away from Heathrow terminals 1 and 3 after officials decided they could no longer accept any more people within the buildings.

BAA officials have been unable to shift the backlog of people already camped out at the airport quickly enough to accommodate the arrival of any further passengers.

Some people have been stuck in the airport over the weekend because of the disruption caused by snow and ice.

A restricted number of flights are currently leaving the airport although BA has cancelled all short haul flights and the south runway remains closed.

Greg Wood describes the situation that Heathrow officials are having to deal with.
