Sarajevo: Siege in the city claims more victims

By June 1992, tensions in Sarajevo had been building for some time.

After protesters were shot and killed at a peace rally in April, events quickly spiralled out of control.

Barriers went up and a front line was rapidly established. The Serbs shelled from the hills and battled government troops on the streets.

Thousands fled but many remained trapped in the city. It was the start of a long siege that was not formally lifted until early 1996.

Martin Bell reports from Sarajevo, June 1992.
