UK had been 'uncomfortably close to seizing up' over fuel

The UK was ''uncomfortably close to seizing up'' over the recent fuel crisis, according to the chairman of the Retail Motor Industry group, Brian Madderson.

Ministers are now advising motorists that there is "no urgency" to top up their petrol supplies after the Unite union ruled out a tanker drivers' strike around Easter.

The union has accused ministers of "whipping up unnecessary tension" over the issue.

Mr Madderson added that the government ''created a crisis where one didn't exist''.
