Blunkett criticises PCSO beat plans

Former Home Secretary David Blunkett has criticised plans to replace traditional police officers on the beat with Community Support Officers (PCSOs).

South Yorkshire Police would make PCSOs the "first line of contact" for the public, saying the proposals would free up regular officers for other duties and more serious incidents.

But Mr Blunkett, whose constituency would be affected by the change, said PCSOs were not intended to replace police.

Danny Savage reports.
