Peter Ackroyd 'concealed sexuality' from family

Writer and historian Peter Ackroyd says he concealed his sexual orientation from his family, even changing a pronoun in his poems from "he" to "she" just before they were published to keep it secret.

He was in a relationship for 23 years with his partner Brian, who died of Aids in 1994 without ever having met his family.

You can hear Peter Ackroyd speaking to Kirsty Young on Radio 4's Desert Island Discs on Sunday 20 May at 10:00 BST. Listen online or browse the extensive Desert Island Discs archive.
