Ziggy Stardust hits 40

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, David Bowie's fifth studio album, was released 40 years ago today.

For many the album's androgenous alter-ego came to define the music and culture of the 1970s. So why has the album endured? The former Spider from Mars and bassist Trevor Bolder, who played on the album, told BBC Radio 4's The World At One about its enduring appeal.
