Police 'filling vacuum' in care system

The care system is failing to track or prevent disappearances by children in care, according to MPs on the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Missing Children.

Det Insp Philip Shakesheff of West Mercia Police, deputy head of a national police group on missing people, told Newsnight's Tim Whewell that he had never been contacted by a care worker asking to collaborate to find a missing child.

The police are filling a vacuum in the system, he said.
