Church of England general synod rejects women bishops

The Church of England is in turmoil tonight after the General Synod voted narrowly against allowing women to become bishops.

The outgoing Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, who had pushed for a yes vote, spoke of his deep personal sadness while campaigners for women bishops described the defeat as a devastating blow to the Church.
