Prisons system changes announced: Prisoners held near home

The Justice Secretary Chris Grayling has unveiled a network of resettlement jails as part of a shake-up of the prisons system.

Under the changes, the majority of offenders will spend the final months of their sentence in prisons close to the area where they will live.

A total of 70 existing jails across England and Wales will become resettlement centres with a pilot beginning in the north west of England this autumn.

The Justice Minister Damian Green explained how the changes would work.
