Bravery award for window cleaner who foiled bank robber

Window cleaner James Rowley has received a bravery award from the police after chasing down a man who tried to rob a bank in south London.

Andrew Fernandez walked in to the Lloyds bank in Coulsdon, Croydon, in November with an imitation handgun.

Mr Rowley told the BBC how he chased the robber up the road with a fire extinguisher before knocking him off his bicycle on which he was trying to escape.

Fernandez, of no fixed abode, who pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery and one count of attempted robbery, was sentenced to life imprisonment at Kingston Crown Court.

BBC London reporter Marc Ashdown spoke to Mr Rowley and one of his customers Caroline Lawless.
