Mental health benefits pilot expanded

The government is expanding a pilot scheme to help people with mental health problems get treatment earlier, as it tries to increase the numbers in work and reduce the benefits bill.

One trial started last month and three others will commence later this year.

A source close to the Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith has denied reports that mental health assessments are to become mandatory for people on some benefits.
