UK commemorations to mark centenary of Battle of the Somme

Many events have been organised to mark the centenary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

The national commemoration in the UK was held in Manchester, reflecting the fact that many of the so-called Pals' Battalions - the volunteers who joined up with friends and colleagues - came from the north of England.
