Banned driver in police chase flips car at 100mph

The number of people caught driving whilst already banned went up by 7.5% in a year to a total of almost 14,500 motorists, according to figures obtained by BBC Radio 5 live.

Among those caught between April 2015 and March 2016 - the most recent statistics released by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency - was a motorist who had been banned four times.

A total of 109,660 drivers received bans in Great Britain in the period: the oldest person to be banned was 94, the youngest 12.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Traffic Constable Dan Hughes, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “There are disqualified drivers out there who will pay no regard whatsoever to the law and the justice system and if they are told they are disqualified they will just flout that without blinking an eye."
