Covid self-isolation: ‘I didn’t have a hot meal for ten days’

What is it like to self-isolate when you have no money?

Newsnight's Katie Razzall spoke to part-time shop worker Rachel - who asked not to be identified - about what it is like to have to self-isolate while on low income.

The government currently offers a £500 discretionary payment for low income workers who need to self-isolate.

The discretionary grant is open to employed and self-employed people in England, who do not qualify for the NHS Test and Trace Support Payment as they no not receive any benefits.

However, three quarters of applications for the discretionary grant are being rejected.

Rachel was fortunate. After 10 days isolating, she received a £500 support grant. But many applications are being rejected.
