Devonport monument makeover

Work has started on restoring the 124ft (38m) tall Devonport Column in Plymouth.

The £800,000 restoration, funded mainly through a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, is part of a £48m regeneration of the Devonport area by the city council and the Real Ideas Organisation.

The landmark was built by architect John Foulston to mark the renaming of Plymouth Dock to Devonport in 1824.

Work on the Grade I listed monument is expected to take six months when it will be reopened to the public.
