Zakariya Ashiq: Terrorist was 'going to swim English Channel'

A Coventry man who has been convicted of trying to join Islamic State said he was prepared to "swim the English Channel" to get to Syria.

Zakariya Ashiq, 20, was found guilty at the Old Bailey on Tuesday of two counts of preparing acts of terrorism.

In WhatsApp recordings sent to his friends via his mobile phone, Ashiq said he was "literally" going to swim the Channel.

"There's no point in me sitting here, living a life like a slave, like a pig," he said.
