Passenger dies as car is submerged in Hampshire ford

A 52-year-old man died after the car he was a passenger in became submerged in a flooded ford in Hampshire.

Police were called on Monday morning to reports a car was trapped at a ford on Thornford Road, Compton Wood, near Newbury.

Emergency services recovered the man from the vehicle but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man's wife, 54, who was driving, managed to swim free of the car.

Simon Hiscock, who lives at a nearby smallholding, said he had rescued over 30 cars from the ford, and described the crossing as "treacherous".
