Island villages in free water row

Southern Water has been accused in Parliament of being high-handed over a deal with two Isle of Wight villages.

Residents of Chillerton and Gatcombe are supplied free or discounted water through an agreement set up in 1907.

Southern Water, which has taken over the agreement, said it was "unfair" to expect other customers to subsidise the villagers' supply.

Isle of Wight MP Andrew Turner said the firm was "riding roughshod" over his constituents.
