Portsmouth marks D-Day anniversary

The Princess Royal has led tributes to those who took part in the D-Day landings at a special event in Portsmouth.

Veterans and serving members of the armed forces attended the service on Southsea Common.

The port was the departure point for troops heading to Sword Beach in June 1944, the easternmost of the five beaches targeted in Operation Overlord.

The event was the main ceremony in the UK to mark the 70th anniversary of the invasion, which falls on Friday.
