Worcester Rock City's Battle Of The Bands 2012

They were caught between a rock and a hard place - Worcester Rock City generalissimos Alby Samuels and Will Hughes have secured a massive coup by bringing chart-toppers Toploader to our region for their Wustock festival in a couple of weeks time. With just one more support slot to fill and a host of bands queueing up they opted for a Battle Of The Bands event to select the final act at the Velvet Lounge in Worcester.

I've got to say that I'm not the greatest fan of this (or any other 'competitive' music events, by the way) but this was very well done under the circumstances with a voting system involving both audience and judges that should be an example to all events of this sort.

Taking part were the very punky Rusty Knives, the bluesy grungers East Of The Sun, the extremely trippy stoners Evolution Of Man and the eternal indie stalwarts of this show Nomad 67 - now back to their original lineup of Jay, Will and bassist Josh.

East Of The Sun were by a gnat's chuff the pick on the night to take the final support slot - but that was almost besides the point - yes there had to be one act 'selected' from the others on the night - but you really can't compare completely different genres - so a massive credit for the emphasis on also treating tonight as a 'showcase' event - now that I much prefer.
