Doctor's research aids own treatment

A retired consultant who championed the regular monitoring of enlarging blood vessels has undergone a new procedure for the condition he researched.

Consultant radiologist, Dr John Russell, 84, wrote extensively on the benefits of regular scans to monitor the progression of aortic aneurysms.

Aortic aneurysms develop with age and cause the aorta, the largest blood vessel in the body to "balloon."

At Manchester Royal Infirmary he underwent keyhole surgery to insert two small mesh tubes to stabilise his own aorta.
