Abingdon row over budget for Jubilee party

Too much money is being spent on celebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in the Oxfordshire town of Abingdon, according to some members of the town council.

The council has set aside £50,000 - 3.8% of its annual budget of £1.3m.

Buckingham, by comparison, is spending £4,500 - or 0.6% of its total budget - while Banbury council has allocated £1,000 - or 0.5% of its total budget, as its celebration is being funded by business.

Abingdon Town Council said it was hoping to recoup almost half its costs through sponsorship and ticket sales.
