Sex change pensioner's 'empathy' with critics

A 78-year-old from East Sussex, who is set to become the oldest person ever to have a sex change operation on the NHS, said she empathised with critics of the procedure.

Ruth Rose, from Newhaven, started living as a woman six years ago after spending most of her life as James Rose, a former RAF navigator.

When asked what she would say to those who think the operation should not be carried out by the NHS, Ms Rose said: "I have empathy with that particular feeling.

"On the other hand...there's many other aberrations against the NHS which I might consider worse than mine."
