Newcastle tank factory's role in defence industry

BAE Systems has announced proposals to close its Newcastle factory where tanks were made for World War, I as part of plans to cut more than 600 jobs.

It has been a site for defence manufacturing for more than 150 years and has played a key role in the city's history.

Newcastle engineer William Armstrong first began manufacturing on the Elswick site in 1847.
