Police attacked before car burnt in Northern Ireland

A police patrol car has been attacked by a masked gang of 15 men in east Belfast, then burnt out at Alliance Party MP Naomi Long's office.

The windows were smashed and a petrol bomb thrown in while an officer was still inside the vehicle.

It happened on the Upper Newtownards Road at about 19:35 GMT. Police have said they are treating the attack as attempted murder.

There has also been rioting in the loyalist Village area of south Belfast.
