David Willetts has said there will be more university places than ever before but that "it's going to be tough" and he couldn't guarantee that every university would survive public spending cuts. He said the government wants to carry on providing finance to the universities but more should come from individual contributions. He said .
The Universities Minister told James Landale, guest presenter on the Andrew Marr Show, they wanted to increase the range of opportunities for young people, such as apprenticeships, training and further education, not just university places.
Willetts also called on graduates in well paid jobs to "make a bigger contribution back towards the cost of university education they've enjoyed".
